INFRACTION INDEX

The Infraction Index™ measures how heavily teams are penalized, scored against the prior season's league average of 100.

See who keeps it clean, and who lives on the wrong side of the whistle.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Infraction Index™?

It is Pick A Penalty's score for how heavily a team, game or league gets penalized (in the NBA, how heavily it fouls). It combines penalties and penalty yards for the NFL, penalties and penalty minutes for the NHL, and fouls and free throws handed to opponents for the NBA, into one number per game.

What does 100 mean?

100 is last season's league average. Every score is measured against that mark, so the same number means the same thing all season.

How do I read numbers above and below 100?

Above 100 means more infractions than last season's average; below 100 means fewer. Subtract 100 to get the percentage: an Index of 125 is 25% above last season's league average, and an Index of 80 is 20% below it.

What does the change number show?

It is how far an Index moved since the previous update, in points. A ▲ means the team, game or league drew more infractions than before. A ▼ means it backed off.

Which leagues does it cover?

The NFL, the NHL and the NBA. Each league is scored against its own prior season, so a 120 in the NFL and a 120 in the NBA are each 20% above their own league's average.

Where does the data come from?

NFL figures are calculated by Pick A Penalty from nflverse data. NHL and NBA figures are calculated from SportsDataverse data.

How often is it updated?

During the season, it's updated at least weekly, often more.
